Metal Roofing FAQs
How does a metal roof compare to traditional shingles?
What are the biggest advantages of a metal roof?
Metal roofs usually last longer, are stronger, and more energy efficient. They help keep your home cool in the summer, hold less snow in the winter, and can last 40–50+ years with some basic care. A lot of people also love metal roofs because of the custom designs you can create.
What are the best brands of metal roofs?
The brand of metal roofing isn’t as important as it is with traditional shingle roofs.
The differences come down to color options, availability, thickness, and finish quality. MCAS Roofing works with leading suppliers such as Englert, Drexel Metals, Pac-Clad (Petersen Aluminum), Una-Clad, and Atas International
What is a standing seam metal roof?
A standing seam metal roof is usually what you think of when people refer to metal roofing. A standing seam metal roof is made from long panels that run vertically up the roof. The seams where the panels meet are raised above the surface (“standing”).
The seams lock together and hide the fasteners, which means fewer exposed screws and a cleaner, more watertight finish. It gives a sleek, modern look.
Standing seam roofs come in two main profiles:
Mechanically locked seams – Seams are folded together for maximum strength and weather resistance.
Snap-loc seams – Panels snap together, offering strong protection with a simpler installation.
Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?
Yes, metal roofing is lightweight and can technically be installed over shingles. However, we recommend removing shingles down to the substrate so we can apply the correct underlayment and flashings. This ensures the roof system lasts as long as possible.
How long do metal roofs last?
Most metal roofs last 50+ years. Copper roofs can last even longer. Many metal roofs come with a 30-year paint finish warranty, and after that time they can often be re-coated to extend their lifespan further.
Is my current roof strong enough to install metal?
Yes! The current structure of your roof is already strong enough to support a metal roof. You can easily upgrade an asphalt shingle roof, cedar shake roof, or slate roof to a metal roof.
Metal is actually lighter than other materials like asphalt shingles, so there’s no additional weight that stresses your roof’s structure. That makes metal roofing a fantastic choice for both older homes and new builds.
Before metal roof installation, we always inspect the roof deck and framing to make sure it’s sound. If repairs are needed to the substrate, we’ll take care of those first so the metal panels have a solid foundation.
